Suppose you have a sprained ankle. Doc 1 does not suggest surgery, but for surgery his success rate is average. Doc 2 suggests surgery much more, but his success rate for surgery is very high. Who do you go to?


My answer was Doc 1 first and if it is confirmed that I need surgery, then I go to Doc 2.

The first doctor displayed character, the second one displayed competence.

In the above example, you trusted neither. You went opportunistically to each for their strengths.

There is a difference between trust and professional relationship.


Trust happens when character combines with competence.


The MLA style of forming relationships -

M - Maintain and enhance their self-esteem

Here, the key to forming a relationship is to look at the good in the other person and try to bring the best out of the other person.


L - Listen and respond with empathy


A - Ask rather than tell - What would you like to do? How would you handle this?

Seek help wherever required.


Every person has strengths and weakness. Key is to identify his strengths and bring out the best in him.


The first and foremost thing about doing a job well is to respect the job.

Take the job only if you respect the job and will give it YOUR ALL.
